Article by Kate J. Ward

Looking around at the homeschool families you know in your co-op, support group, or church, you might observe that most consist of more than one child. In fact, a 2006 National Center for Education report found that families with three or more children make up 62% of the homeschool population. If you’re one of the few with an only child at home, you may be asking yourself the question, “Can I homeschool my only child?”The emphatic answer is yes, you can. Only-child families reap the same benefits homeschooling provides to larger families. A friend who homeschooled her only son until the age of 10, when their family miraculously grew in size, reminded me that homeschooling, like anything else, is what you make it. If you sow good seed in your homeschool, you will reap an abundant harvest, regardless of the number of children in your home.My husband and I set our hearts to homeschool our kids before we even had any. We’d been introduced to homeschooling just before our now 12-year-old was born. Our reasons for homeschooling mirrored those of most families: to educate the whole child, to keep her heart at home, to raise her with a strong Christian worldview. We paid little attention to her being an only child until I joined a homeschool support group and realized we were in the minority. Only two of the more than thirty families in my support group–including ourselves–were only-child families.I didn’t panic. Our convictions hadn’t changed. We had a God-given vision for our family. I rejoiced in the benefits of only-child homeschooling I could see immediately: an abundance of one-on-one time, more freedom in choosing curriculum and activities, and more flexibility in our schedule than that already afforded by homeschooling. But first, let’s consider some of the trials you might face as you endeavor to homeschool your only child. Homeschooling an only child does provide some unique challenges, but none of them are insurmountable. Interaction with Others I don’t believe there’s a homeschooling mom out there who has not fielded questions about socialization. As an only-child family, you might feel doubly targeted. Well-intentioned friends and family argued that our daughter needed to be in a traditional school setting because she didn’t have siblings to help her learn to share and work out differences. Privately, I didn’t want her subjected to a classroom of same-age peers who would help shape her sense of self.So I purposed to fill in the gaps left by the absence of brothers and sisters. One of the first lessons we taught her was respect: for herself, for others, and for things. Simple, I know; also useful as overall life values. Applied to homeschooling, these rules taught our daughter the elements of true socialization, not what society calls socialization. She was taught to respect herself in her thought life and in her image of herself as a bright, compassionate, and strong child of God. Respecting others became important when we visited the library and when listening to the instructions for her math assignment. Respect for things developed naturally out of discussions of God’s creation. Caring for her own toys, the fragile things in our home, and items borrowed from friends grew out of that.We also strove to provide opportunities for our daughter to build relationships. We involved ourselves in church and community events. We attended field trips organized by our support group. We took steps to promote friendships, scheduling time together. We joined our support group in visiting residents at a retirement home once a month, providing our daughter both the benefit of practicing her social skills and the value of being a blessing to others. These activities had as their main purpose to teach her to interact with people in all ages and stages of life.Avoiding a Child-Centered Home Falling into the trap of a child-centered home is a genuine concern for any parent, especially the parent of a homeschooled only child. With our child being such a large focus in our lives, how do we maintain the proper authority in our home? We make sure her responsibilities at home increase as she grows in maturity and capability. We set the example of serving others by reaching out to widowed neighbors and sick friends. We model a healthy marriage where we make time for each other as husband and wife, and we remember to put God first above all else.One-on-One Time with Parents Homeschooling already affords valuable quality time between parents and children. When you are homeschooling an only child, that time becomes perhaps even more beneficial. With Mom and Dad as our daughter’s main playmates, we are able to focus on specific skills such as sharing and playing fairly.Once, my husband came in from work and found our daughter and me competing fiercely in a game of Candy Land. Although it’s sometimes tempting to let her win, we know that if we let her win every time, she won’t know how to lose graciously. We are able to devote much of our time to nurturing her gifts and interests and embedding our values into her heart. Regardless of family size, that’s one of the greatest blessings of home education.Freedom and Flexibility Every child is a one-of-a-kind creation of God, and <a href=” http://www.crosswalk.com/family/homeschool/“>homeschooling gives us the opportunity to focus on the uniqueness of each child. That’s another one of the blessings we enjoy regardless of family size–which means families like ours can benefit from homeschooling just as much as anyone. We cherish our freedom of choice. We choose the curriculum that compliments our child’s learning style, the amount of time devoted to a subject, whether our child will learn cursive or Latin, workbooks or manipulatives, and on it goes.Different Sizes, Same Blessings As I’ve emphasized again and again, the blessings of homeschooling are basically the same regardless of family size. Some of the blessings may show themselves in different ways, and to some extent they may vary in quantity. For example, a family with more children enjoys more built-in opportunities to teach qualities such as cooperation and sharing, while a family with only one child enjoys greater flexibility in choosing curriculum and activities. In both cases, the versatility of homeschooling allows families to customize their approach, take advantage of built-in strengths, and fill in potential areas of weakness. That’s the great advantage of homeschooling–it’s customizable, flexible, and adaptable to the unique circumstances of your family. The Journey Is Worth It What I want to impress upon you, the parent of an only child wondering about pressing on, is this: the journey is still worth it. It may take some creative thinking on your part, but if God has given you the vision to homeschool your child, nothing is impossible with Him. “He which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ” (Philippians 1:6).

If you are facing some hard times in your Christian homeschool, here are some wonderful suggestions and tips to help you and the family survive.

Think over the reasons why you decided to start homeschooling to begin with.

For example, maybe a prominent reason was to have the family together more often. When you reflect on your reasons to homeschool, it’s going to help put all your current frustrations into a better perspective.

As difficulties come up in your Christian homeschool, as they always will, call the entire family for a meeting. Discuss all the issues, together, pray about them and then you all can make decisions in how you will solve the problems.

Establish traditions in your family so the children can depend on them as regular events in their lives. Read aloud every single day because this is an extremely important part of the family traditions. It is the best way to teach any subject.

A way for you to make excitement and fun into your homeschool, celebrate all the unusual holidays as a part of the curriculum.

Is your family reading the Laura Wider books? Her birthday is February 7th, celebrate the day with cake and a party.

If you are studying the Roman Empire, look into the date of March 15th, this is the day which Julius Caesar had been assassinated.

Take time to ask the children what they’re interested in learning. Maybe what you’re teaching at the moment holds no interest in the children right now.

No one says you must keep going in that direction. You are in charge of your Christian homeschool. If your children want to learn what you’re teaching them, you will have way less conflict to put up with. So, just ask them.

You need to give yourself the permission to free your children of a program or curriculum that just isn’t working out.

A program that has the whole family stressed out, fighting and crying is not good for your Christian homeschool.

Really pray about the direction you should be taking your homeschool in. This is the best plan to follow.

What is D’nealian handwriting? D’nealian is an alternative to the traditional style of manuscript handwriting. It is more like cursive than traditional manuscript. It combines some elements from traditional manuscript and some from cursive resulting in a new style which is somewhere in between the two.

This new handwriting style was created by an elementary school teacher named Donald Neal Thurber. The name comes from his first initial combined with his middle name. While it has rapidly gained supporters, D’nealian school and home school curriculum materials can be somewhat difficult to find because they are published exclusively by Pearson Education. Pearson offers D’nealian curriculum books for both manuscript and cursive for grades K-8.

So should teachers abandon traditional manuscript and replace it with the new style? That is a debate that follows D’nealian wherever it goes.

Advocates claim it is easier for kids to learn than traditional manuscript for two reasons:
D’nealian requires fewer pencil lifts so there are fewer errors, especially common errors of reversing letters like ‘b’ and ‘d’ or ‘g’ and ‘p’. Since there are no pencil lifts required to form these letters, students are far less likely to reverse the letters.
D’nealian introduces children to lowercase letters in natural, progressive stages. Children use a finger to trace a model letter, first following the directional arrows, then on their own.

Beyond just being easier to learn than manuscript, supporters claim the primary benefit of D’nealian is that it makes it easier for kids to make the transition to cursive because they will already be familiar with many elements of cursive.

But while it might solve some problems, critics claim D’nealian creates other problems which outweigh the benefits.

Critics have two main objections:
D’nealian students can and probably will skip learning traditional Zaner-Bloser manuscript altogether. However, if they do that they might be penalized later for failing to write with traditional manuscript, especially if they move to a new school district where D’nealian is not taught and traditional manuscript is expected and required.
To solve the first problem, students would need to learn all 3 handwriting styles. However, learning three different styles means a lot more work and increases the likelihood of confusion.

To keep it simple, critics say it would be best to just forget D’nealian altogether.

Who is right? Both sides make valid points. The final choice comes down to personal preferences so the debate could go on for a long time.

Albert Einstein, arguably the greatest mathematician/scientist of our or any time, was by no means an honor student. School was not to his liking, and he did not excel in his classes. But he was able in spite of (or perhaps because of) that “shortcoming” to successfully nurture an inner genius that was prolific, productive, and formidable. A homeschool environment is perhaps then the most likely option for children whose particular genius does not fare well in the classroom.

Here’s what Einstein had to say about exams, “One had to cram all this stuff into one’s mind for the examinations, whether one liked it or not. This coercion had such a deterring effect on me that, after I had passed the final examination, I found the consideration of any scientific problems distasteful to me for an entire year.” It’s possible to extrapolate this to a child who may be under the considerable stress of math fears or phobias. An obvious solution could be a homeschool math curriculum that’s an antidote to such a debilitating, stressful environment.

Here’s a few more of Einstein’s thoughts on education and formal schooling, “The only thing that interfered with my learning is my education.” And, “Education is what remains after one has forgotten everything he learned in school.” Perhaps a differentiation between schooling and education is relevant here. The root of the word education is educere from the Latin, “to lead out.” Whereas schooling implies sameness and a sort of herding together, as in “a school of fish,” education can be seen as discovering the genius within and “leading it out” into the world.

          ]]>

Your homeschool math curriculum can reflect this. Mathematics should be a joy, not a chore. This is its true nature! And the math phobias and fears that are all too prevalent today can be much alleviated by two things: a curious, interested, adventuresome approach, and a tolerance for mistakes. Both of these qualities should be present in teacher and student alike. Einstein said, “Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new.” And, “I have no special talents, I am only passionately curious. The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing.”

Fear of making mistakes is perhaps the greatest cause of math anxiety. One way to create a climate that’s more friendly and tolerant of so-called mistakes is to encourage exploration in all of your homeschool math curriculum lessons. Honing the skill of estimation is a good example of guessing at the answer, along with a recognition that there can be more than one right answer. Teaching a new concept with an exploratory rather than a definitive, finished attitude is another way to create a friendlier learning environment.

Here’s an example. When first teaching the concept of fractions, use something concrete as a model, like a piece of fruit. Ask a lot of questions as you explore the possibilities. As you cut the fruit up, ask what is happening at each step, so the students arrive at an understanding of the whole and its parts on their own. They are constructing the lesson along with you the teacher, so the innate knowledge within them is growing naturally rather than the finished concept being foisted upon them without their making a contribution to the learning process.

As Einstein said, “Most teachers waste their time by asking questions which are intended to discover what a pupil does not know, whereas the true art of questioning has for its purpose to discover what the pupil knows or is capable of knowing.” You can lessen math anxiety by conveying that even great geniuses had their moments of struggling with math. As Einstein said, “Do not worry about your difficulties in mathematics. I can assure you mine are still greater.”

Yes, math should be a joy, not a chore. When its innate fun and beauty is included in all of your homeschool math lessons, this becomes possible. A willingness of the student to exert an effort, to gladly explore and learn all there is to know of the world and its wonder, is at the root of true education. To this, Einstein said, “Never regard your study as a duty, but as the enviable opportunity to learn to know the liberating influence of beauty in the realm of the spirit for your own personal joy and to the profit of the community to which your later work belongs.” That says it all! And could be the essence and worthy goal of any homeschool curriculum.

Einstein was as much a philosopher as a mathematician/scientist. The sign hanging on his office wall at Princeton said,”Not everything that counts can be counted, and not everything that can be counted counts.” Make your homeschool math curriculum count with lessons that honor the imagination and the creative genius that lives within each of your students.

You have decided that homeschooling is the way to teach your child and now you’ve got to prepared yourself and your children for all of the difficulties that come with it. You know the road ahead could be a bit rough, but the rewards more than make up for it. Clearly, the 1st thing you have got to check out are your state laws concerning homeschooling. You may do this to ascertain if you’ve got to meet any sort of state need. Most states need an affidavit filed with the state’s education office that you choose to homeschool your youngster. There are essentially 3 classes of homeschooling laws. Learn about your nation’s laws and know what your debts are to the state before you start homeschooling. After you have all the state paperwork and other matters sorted you can move on to the next step.

A good next step would be to search for a home college support group. A support group is good because say, if you live in an amicable or curios kind of neighborhood, you are well meaning chums may try and prejudice your call to home college. At the least, they may put a large amount of questions in your consciousness that have you making 2nd thoughts. Many support groups organize fun events like visits to the zoo, museum, tours to the ice cream shop, and so on. If your kids hit it off with other home schooled youngsters in your group, they may be in a position to build lasting relations with these children that may not fade when their buddies change faculties. Depending on the technique of homeschooling, you can select diverse tools that help you in the procedure.

When you homeschool, you need to set certain ground rules.

Homeschooling needs plenty of self-control and tough work to make it work efficiently. Here is an inventory of some of the things to keep in viewpoint : one. Eagerness to learn two.

Difficult work and effort – work ethic three. Discipline four. Enthusiasm It truly reduces down to understanding why you chose homeschooling in the 1st place. Your motives and your reasons to homeschool are significant pillars that the full basis of your youngster’s lessons and private development plan depends. Consulting with your youngsters to get their thoughts about curriculum decisions, for example. Is commonly beneficial too. When you have each factor considered, choose a curriculum or custom make a curriculum that most nearly fits your kid’s academic and private development wants. Record keeping is a crucial part of homeschooling as it is your record keeping that’ll be looked at or examinated later when your youngster transfers into another college or enters school. Look into all of the many methods of record keeping and set up a schedule to update your records now and then. Your homeschool day does not have to be a long drawnout out day. Permit your youngster to have a part in the daily study room activities and to what extent of time is concerned with each subject covered.

Adaptability and fun are the cornerstones of homeschooling. Make the child learn the talents he’s prepared for as your kid matures educationally. Light parenting is the way to successful homeschooling. Homeschool youngsters also turn out to be shockin

Article by Nick

Some parents may feel uncomfortable sending their kids to public or private schools. This can be for a number of different reasons. Outdated curriculums can persuade parents into believing that homeschooling is their best option. Others object to the nature of subject matter taught to students partly due to religious reasons. Parents who believe that schools are unsafe also opt for homeschooling. In some areas of the country this is indeed a valid reason.

There are a lot of ‘Pros’ when choosing to home school a child. The child can be given individual attention, where statistics show that children schooled at home often fare better in academics. Curriculums given by schools may not benefit every student, hence parents are able to teach their children specific curriculum that can benefit them the most. Hiring tutors is a common way that parents homeschool their kids. Those parents who don’t have the time or sufficient knowledge to teach their children should follow this method if they choose homeschooling for their kids.

Homeschooling provides a great way to improve the bond of family members. Kids might also have some extra time for activities that they enjoy since the time spent on teaching can be shortened through home schooling.Children being homeschooled must acknowledge their situation, because rules set at home might be tougher to be consistent with. However, “Introduction to Homeschooling” includes a detailed section on overcoming common problems that you or your child might face.

Parents who homeschool their kids may need a lot of help as they are not trained educationalists. Going to public institutions will help provide you with some essential information, however “Introduction to Homeschooling” book offers a list of resources you can check out. Many books and video progams can offer a huge amount of information on homeschooling children. Parents can discuss common problems and seek guidance from those who have understanding and experience on the subject.

“Introduction to Homeschooling” is an excellent resource for parents/ guardians who want to implement a homeschooling program for their children. This homeschooling information provides the essential processes needed to be carried out when homeschooling a child. It also gives you study planners and timetables so that your child is able to learn on a consistent level.

You are now capable of providing your children with the tools and education they need to learn without the many problems that occur in regular schooling conditions.

Introduction to homeschooling is a little project I have worked on for many months. It infuses my knowledge on homeschooling and passes it onto all parents willing to have a starting guide. I have been writing for many years on a lot of topics, especially educational articles.
